The Ecology of the Boreal White and Black Spruce Zone

ثبت نشده
چکیده

T he Boreal White and Black Spruce Zone forms part of a vast boreal forest that stretches across northern Canada from Newfoundland to the Yukon. In many ways, this zone fits the popular image of the Canadian north as a place with large areas of unspoiled wilderness, long cold winters, and abundant wildlife. Forests and muskeg dominate the landscape , and moose, caribou, bears, and wolves are plentiful, along with black flies and mosquitoes.

Clearcutting and Site Preparation, but Not Planting, Promoted Early Tree Regeneration in Boreal Alaska

The stand initiation stage decisively influences future forest structure and composition, particularly in the boreal forest which is a stand replacement disturbance driven system. In boreal Alaska, the conventional forest management paradigm has focused on the production of large-dimension timber, particularly white spruce (Picea glauca). However, energy generation and heating from wood is incr...

Will changes in root-zone temperature in boreal spring affect recovery of photosynthesis in Picea mariana and Populus tremuloides in a future climate?

Future climate will alter the soil cover of mosses and snow depths in the boreal forests of eastern Canada. In field manipulation experiments, we assessed the effects of varying moss and snow depths on the physiology of black spruce (Picea -mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) in the boreal black spruce forest of western Québec. For 1 year, naturally regenera...

Carbon balance of the taiga forest within Alaska: present and future

Forest biomass, rates of production, and carbon dynamics are a function of climate, plant species present, and the structure of the soil organic and mineral layers. Inventory data from the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) Inventory Analysis Unit was used to develop estimates of the land area represented by the major overstory species at various age-classes. The CENTURY model was then used to develop ...

Linking sediment-charcoal records and ecological modeling to understand causes of fire-regime change in boreal forests.

Interactions between vegetation and fire have the potential to overshadow direct effects of climate change on fire regimes in boreal forests of North America. We develop methods to compare sediment-charcoal records with fire regimes simulated by an ecologica model, ALFRESCO (Alaskan Frame-based Ecosystem Code) and apply these methods to evaluate potential causes of a mid-Holocene fire-regime sh...
